So don’t just chuck your traditions and start eating completely different foods just because the world is a global village and you can eat any type of food that you want to. Eat at least one meal a day that represents your traditional food, and chances are that you will stay healthy and productive. Eat local and seasonal food. Climate, altitude, humidity, wind, and soil quality, are factors that affect the food that grows locally and also our digestive system. And, happily, natural health is currently enjoying the comeback it deserves. To enjoy it, there are at least three really important aspects to address. The first is your diet. There’s a saying that a quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. Three quarters of what you eat keeps your doctor alive. So if you eat a typical western diet of fast foods, canned drinks and sweets or chocolate, you know you’re heading for disaster. A natural diet consists of lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, preferably raw. Raw isn’t essential, but will take you that extra mile. As long as at least 30% is raw, you’ll do all right. By raw I mean unpasteurised, unheated in any way, un-radiated, unadulterated. Just fresh produce recently harvested. So fresh produce should be the bulk of your diet. If you can’t see yourself eating a lot of fresh produce, then I suggest you invest in a food dehydrator. That dries fresh food without losing the nutrients in them. Have you ever tried dried strawberries? They are absolutely delicious. I’m sure you’ll enjoy making your own un-sundried tomatoes, too. And try foods you haven’t tried before. My neighbour has never tried avocado and yet they could grow in her back yard. Be adventurous!The next biggest food group is the nuts, seeds, rice, oats and yoghurtThen come eggs, bread, wheat, cereal, fish, chicken, chocolate. Then comes the red meat. Lastly comes artificial sweeteners. My suggestion is to avoid these altogether. This diet follows the 80/20 principle. If you maintain this diet, it’s amazing what ailments won’t affect you. Make sure 100% of what you eat goes into keeping you healthy, not just alive. And let the doctors starve!Another really important aspect of natural health is your health care modality. Obviously that’s going to be a natural one. Which you choose is a very personal matter. But I suggest you remain open and honour your feelings. Your feelings will always take you in the right direction. I have long since learnt the folly of following my head over my feelings. For many people, food allergies can affect their lives and eating habits with varying degrees of severity. Experiencing a bodily aversion to certain foods can be a hindrance but remaining knowledgeable about the effects that certain cuisines can have on specific bodies could save a life. Allergies cause the body’s immune system to jump into overdrive and make it produce massive amounts of histamine which can in turn cause anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal problem that at its worst can cut off air from the lungs by making the esophagus and throat swell thereby causing death. In its lesser stages, an allergic reaction can make the person break out in hives and itchy skin rashes, cause diarrhea, vomiting, and swollen lips. Inflammation from food intolerance and allergies can have a range of effects on the health of a person, such as fatigue, migraines, obesity, eczema, and gastrointestinal disorders. Many times people do not know that they have an intolerance for a food if they do not observe that they are often uncomfortable with the irritating symptoms previously mentioned. There are medical tests, such as ALCAT, available for adults and children who are having an allergic reaction, but being informed when going in for testing is the best bet to not being misdiagnosed with allergies that you don’t have. If symptoms of hives, rash, discomfort are discovered after a meal please note what has been consumed in the past several hours so that there isn’t blind testing occurring. The tests can be sensitive, so simply going in and getting tested for everything may result in false positives. Some food allergies are more common in children (cow’s milk, peanuts, hen’s eggs) and some are more likely in adults (shellfish allergies, peanuts, certain fruits) with the chance for tolerance to those foods to build over time so later testing is advised. Newly developed guidelines in testing suggest that patients test every so often to see if the allergy to specific foods fades over time, especially with children because what affects them in childhood may no longer be a problem in adulthood. If someone has a known severe allergy to a certain food, it is imperative that they wear a medical bracelet and stay diligent in specifying said allergy at restaurants.
